Drei aufeinanderfolgende Jahre mit wenig Regen haben die Ernten dezimiert und ein ungewöhnlich hohes Viehsterben verursacht. Der Mangel an Wasser und Weideland zwingt Familien, ihr Zuhause zu verlassen, und führt zu zunehmenden Konflikten zwischen den Gemeinschaften.
Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) hat eine lange Geschichte innovativer Partnerschaften mit dem Privatsektor, die sich aus technischer Zusammenarbeit, Wissenstransfer und finanzieller Unterstützung zusammensetzt.
Es ist fast Mittag an einem heißen Tag im August (53°C). Wir folgen Jermal, einem Bauern in Basra, Irak, auf einem schmalen Pfad zu seinem Gewächshaus. Unsere Schritte wirbeln Staub von der rissigen, sepiafarbenen Erde auf.
Die beiden modernen Werkstätten mit automatisierten Systemen und Qualitätssicherungsprozessen können dafür genutzt werden, Steinkörbe zur Befestigung von Hängen, zum Schutz von Flussbetten und Ufern sowie für andere Katastrophenschutzmaßnahmen herzustellen.
Die erweiterte Hilfe, die WFP und humanitäre Partner für die von den Überschwemmungen betroffenen Familien bereitstellen, umfasst Ernährungshilfe, Vorbeugung gegen Unterernährung und Unterstützung bei der Sicherung des Lebensunterhalts. WFP leistet außerdem logistische Unterstützung für den Hilfseinsatz.
"Wir haben keine andere Wahl, als Essen von den Hungernden zu nehmen, um die Verhungernden zu ernähren, und wenn wir nicht sofort Mittel erhalten, laufen wir Gefahr, in ein paar Wochen nicht einmal mehr die Verhungernden ernähren zu können.
ROM - Die Zahl der Menschen, die weltweit an akutem Hunger leiden, wird voraussichtlich aufgrund der sich zuspitzenden Hungerkrise in 19 „Hunger Hotspots“ weiter rapide steigen.
