Schon vor dem Ausbruch des Konflikts am 15. April waren im Sudan so viele Menschen wie nie zuvor von Hunger betroffen. Für das Jahr 2023 plante WFP, mehr als 7,6 Millionen Menschen zu unterstützen. Die anhaltenden Kämpfe hindern WFP daran, dringend benötigte Nahrungsmittel zu liefern, Schulspeisungen für Kinder bereitzustellen oder Unterernährung zu verhindern und zu behandeln.
Mit Zuwendungen in Höhe von 1,2 Milliarden Euro für die Arbeit von WFP in über 60 Ländern, ist Deutschland wieder zweitgrößter Geber für WFP und finanziell an der Hälfte der Einsätze weltweit beteiligt. Deutsche Mittel flossen auch 2023 in beide Arbeitsbereiche von WFP – humanitäre Hilfe und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit.

Der Besuch unterstreicht die beträchtlichen Investitionen der Regierungen Frankreichs und Deutschlands in das Land sowie ihre fortlaufende Partnerschaft mit der Regierung der Demokratischen Volksrepublik Laos und dem WFP. Diese Partnerschaft konzentriert sich insbesondere auf die Stärkung der Rolle der Frau angesichts der sich verschlechternden Ernährungssituation.
„Seit Beginn dieser Pandemie hat WFP führende Politikerinnen und Politiker in der ganzen Welt dazu aufgerufen, zu handeln und viele sind diesem Ruf nachgekommen – darunter auch Mitglieder der Arabischen Liga“, sagte Beasley bei der Eröffnungssitzung der 106. Es ist 10:00 Uhr, als der stellvertretende Koordinator des WFP-Logistik-Clusters und Verantwortlicher für den COVID-19-Einsatzplan im Südsudan, Brian Langdon, seinen ersten Anruf des Tages erhält. Als die Kämpfer in ihr sudanesisches Dorf kamen, floh die 50-jährige Aicha Madar mit ihrer Tochter Fatima und schloss sich Tausenden an, die sich auf den Weg über die Grenze in den Osten des Tschads machten.
"Die bewaffneten Gruppen haben alles niedergebrannt", sagt Aicha, die mit einer Gruppe anderer Flüchtlinge zusammensitzt und ihre einjährige Tochter auf dem Schoß hält.
