Der Friedensnobelpreis würdigt das UN-Welternährungsprogramm „für seinen Einsatz im Kampf gegen den Hunger, seinen Beitrag zur Verbesserung der Bedingungen für Frieden in Konfliktregionen und seine Rolle als treibende Kraft bei der Verhinderung des Einsatzes von Hunger als Waffe in Krieg und Konflikt.“
Beasleys Libanon-Besuch erfolgt zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem das Land mit gleich drei Krisen kämpft: Der Explosion, dem wirtschaftlichen Zusammenbruch und den Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie. Während seines dreitägigen Aufenthalts im Libanon besichtigte er die Häfen von Beirut und Tripolis und nahm an einer Nahrungsmittelverteilung in Gemeinschaftsküchen des WFP-Partners Caritas teil.
„Der globale humanitäre Druck steigt weiter an. Insbesondere der Bedarf an internationaler Nahrungsmittelhilfe hat sich seit der COVID-Pandemie fast verdreifacht. Darum ist es gerade jetzt so wichtig, Hilfe vor Ort zu leisten und Perspektiven zu schaffen.
