Der Bericht konzentriert sich auf jene Länder und Gebiete, in denen das Ausmaß und die Schwere der Ernährungskrise lokale Ressourcen und Kapazitäten übersteigen.
Der Friedensnobelpreis würdigt das UN-Welternährungsprogramm „für seinen Einsatz im Kampf gegen den Hunger, seinen Beitrag zur Verbesserung der Bedingungen für Frieden in Konfliktregionen und seine Rolle als treibende Kraft bei der Verhinderung des Einsatzes von Hunger als Waffe in Krieg und Konflikt.“
Die Lieferung von 23.000 Tonnen Weizen ist für die humanitäre Hilfe von WFP am Horn von Afrika bestimmt, wo in der von einer Dürre heimgesuchten Region eine Hungersnot droht.
WFP unterstützt nationale Regierungen, die bereits mit den zusammenwirkenden Effekten von Konflikten, der Klimakrise und den steigenden Kosten für Nahrungsmittel und Treibstoffe zu kämpfen haben, den Hunger zu bekämpfen.
Der EU-Kommissar für internationale Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung Neven Mimica sagte: „Gesicherte Ernährung bleibt eine globale Herausforderung. Daher wird die EU zwischen 2014 und 2020 knapp 9 Milliarden Euro für gesicherte Ernährung und nachhaltige Landwirtschaft in über 60 Ländern bereitgestellt haben.
Die Klimakrise zerstört Leben und Lebensgrundlagen auf der ganzen Welt. Emissionssenkungen zur Eindämmung des globalen Temperaturanstiegs sind von entscheidender Bedeutung, aber wir können nicht warten, bis diese umgesetzt werden. Die Menschen, die schon jetzt am meisten von der Krise betroffen sind, brauchen dringend Unterstützung bei der Anpassung an die Auswirkungen.
