Bereits jetzt muss WFP mehr als 6 Millionen Menschen am Horn von Afrika mit Ernährungshilfe unterstützen.
Erhebliche Mittelkürzungen im östlichen und südlichen Afrika sowie im Nahen Osten haben dazu geführt, dass für einige der gefährdetsten Menschen der Welt, die zum Überleben auf die Nahrungsmittel des WFP angewiesen sind, Rationen gekürzt werden mussten. Allein in Ostafrika wurden die Rationen für fast drei Viertel der Flüchtlinge um bis zu 60 Prozent gekürzt.
„Hunger und Mangelernährung waren bereits auf alarmierendem Niveau. Nun sind wir gezwungen, von den Hungernden zu nehmen, um die Verhungernden zu ernähren, so dass Millionen Familien um ihre nächste Mahlzeit kämpfen müssen”, sagte Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP-Landesdirektorin in Afghanistan.
Die derzeitige Hungerkrise ist auf eine Kombination von Faktoren zurückzuführen, darunter jahrelange Dürreperioden, die zu einem erheblichen Rückgang der Nahrungsmittelproduktion und zu Verlusten an Weideland geführt haben, sowie die wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie.
Der deutsche Botschafter in Jordanien, Bernhard Kampmann, gab den Beitrag heute auf einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz bekannt und bekräftigte das Engagement seines Landes, die jordanische Regierung und WFP bei der Deckung des Nahrungsmittelbedarfs von rund einer halben Million Flüchtlingen in Jordanien zu unterstützen.
„Wir freuen uns, dass die Aufstockung unserer Mittel gerade noch
