Gewalt und Unsicherheit haben 7,4 Millionen Menschen in der zentralen Sahelzone in Westafrika in den akuten Hunger gestürzt. Die Zahl der Vertriebenen ist von 70.000 vor zwei Jahren auf heute fast 1,6 Millionen angestiegen – darunter mehr als 288.000 Menschen in Mali, mehr als 265.000 in Niger und über eine Million in Burkina Faso.
Die Lage im Sudan ist katastrophal. Trotz der Bemühungen von WFP, das seit Ausbruch des Krieges landesweit Millionen Menschen mit Nahrungsmitteln versorgt hat, leiden derzeit fast 18 Millionen Menschen im ganzen Land unter akutem Hunger (IPC3+).
WFP hat wiederholt vor einer drohenden Hungerkatastrophe im Sudan gewarnt.
Bis Mittwochmorgen hatte WFP fast 64.000 Menschen erreicht, die dringend Ernährungshilfe benötigen. Es wurden verzehrfertige Nahrungsmittelrationen, Nahrungsmittelpakete für Familien und warme Mahlzeiten bereitgestellt.
Zunehmende bewaffnete Konflikte und Unsicherheit, weit verbreitete Armut und die negativen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels sind eine echte Bedrohung für die Länder im Zentrum der Sahelzone. Angriffe auf Zivilisten und Infrastruktur sowie Konflikte zwischen staatlichen und nichtstaatlichen bewaffneten Gruppen haben zu massiver Vertreibung in Burkina Faso, Mali und Niger geführt.
Auf offizielles Ersuchen der ukrainischen Regierung leitet das UN-Welternährungsprogramm (WFP) einen Nothilfeeinsatz ein, um Menschen, die vor dem Konflikt innerhalb der Ukraine und in die Nachbarländer fliehen, mit Ernährungshilfe zu unterstützen.
