Abseits der Stadt Balaka im Süden Malawis, liegt das Dorf Jumbe. Die Bewohner der Gemeinde leben hauptsächlich vom Maisanbau. Doch zwischen Gebüsch und Lehmhäusern stehen die Felder leer — ausgetrocknet von einer schweren Dürre in Folge des Klimaphänomens El Niño.
„Unser Mais hat die Hitze nicht überstanden", sagt Katelin Singano-Dick, die zusammen mit ihrem Mann und sieben Kindern in Jumbe lebt.
Drei aufeinanderfolgende Jahre mit wenig Regen haben die Ernten dezimiert und ein ungewöhnlich hohes Viehsterben verursacht. Der Mangel an Wasser und Weideland zwingt Familien, ihr Zuhause zu verlassen, und führt zu zunehmenden Konflikten zwischen den Gemeinschaften.
WFP unterstützt nationale Regierungen, die bereits mit den zusammenwirkenden Effekten von Konflikten, der Klimakrise und den steigenden Kosten für Nahrungsmittel und Treibstoffe zu kämpfen haben, den Hunger zu bekämpfen.
