Eine WFP-Überprüfung unter registrierten Empfängern der Ernährungshilfe hat ergeben, dass viele in der Hauptstadt nicht die Notrationen erhalten haben, die ihnen zustehen. In anderen Gebieten wurde Hungernden die volle Notration verweigert.
"WFP ist äußerst besorgt über die sich verschlechternde Situation in Nordäthiopien, wo bereits viele Menschen mit schwerem Hunger konfrontiert sind. Unsere Teams arbeiten mit Hochdruck daran, ihnen dringend Nahrungsmittel zu liefern", sagt Chris Nikoi, Landesdirektor des WFP in Äthiopien.
Islamabad, den 2. August 2010 - Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) hat am Sonntag damit begonnen, 35.000 Familien mit Ernährungshilfe zu unterstützen, die von den verheerenden Überschwemmungen im Nordwesten Pakistans betroffen sind.
Der Friedensnobelpreis würdigt das UN-Welternährungsprogramm „für seinen Einsatz im Kampf gegen den Hunger, seinen Beitrag zur Verbesserung der Bedingungen für Frieden in Konfliktregionen und seine Rolle als treibende Kraft bei der Verhinderung des Einsatzes von Hunger als Waffe in Krieg und Konflikt.“
Es wird erwartet, dass sich mehr als 31 Millionen Menschen in der Region in der kommenden sogenannten „mageren Jahreszeit“ – also der Zeit, in der die Nahrung vor der nächsten Ernte knapp ist– von Juni bis August nicht selbst ernähren können werden.
