WFP reagiert damit auf die zum einen nach UN-Angaben drohende humanitäre Krise an der libysch-tunesischen Grenze, die derzeit stündlich mehr als 1.000 Flüchtlinge passieren. Zum anderen reagiert WFP auf die Ernährungssituation in Libyen selbst, wo vielfach Vorräte erschöpft sind und große Versorgungsengpässe drohen.
Seit 2012 nimmt Mauretanien malische Flüchtlinge auf, von denen derzeit 89.468 in der südlichen Region Hodh Chargui leben. Das Land hat sich voll und ganz einer Politik der Integration verschrieben und Maßnahmen ergriffen, um Flüchtlingen den gleichen Zugang zu Dienstleistungen zu gewähren wie Einheimischen.
„Freerice hat gezeigt, dass ein einfacher Klick auf die Maus sehr viel ausmachen kann, um hungrigen Menschen zu helfen“, so die Direktorin der Kommunikationsabteilung des UN World Food Programme (WFP), Nancy Roman.
Etwa 1,14 Millionen Menschen im Süden Madagaskars leiden an einem hohen Maß an akutem Hunger. Davon befinden sich fast 14.000 Menschen in Phase 5 – der höchsten und schlimmsten Kategorie der fünfstufigen Skala der sogenannten „Integrated Food Security Phase Classification“ (IPC).
Die derzeitige Hungerkrise ist auf eine Kombination von Faktoren zurückzuführen, darunter jahrelange Dürreperioden, die zu einem erheblichen Rückgang der Nahrungsmittelproduktion und zu Verlusten an Weideland geführt haben, sowie die wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie.
McCain, die seit 2021 Botschafterin der Vereinigten Staaten bei den drei UN-Organisationen für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft in Rom ist, übernimmt die Leitung einer Organisation, die im vergangenen Jahr 158 Millionen Menschen mit Ernährungshilfe unterstützt hat – mehr als jemals zuvor.
Jedes zweite Schulkind, rund 388 Millionen Kinder weltweit, erhielten täglich eine Schulmahlzeit, als die Pandemie ausbrach – die höchste Zahl in der Geschichte laut dem WFP-Bericht „State of School Feeding Worldwide“ zur weltweiten Lage von Schulmahlzeiten.
