ROM – Laut dem neuesten Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) litten im Jahr 2023 fast 282 Millionen Menschen in 59 Ländern und Gebieten akuten Hunger - ein weltweiter Anstieg um 24 Millionen im Vergleich zum Vorjahr.

Nach fünf Jahren Bürgerkrieg können Bauern in Syrien die Folgen der Krise nicht mehr bewältigen. Das zeigt die jüngste Analyse der Vereinten Nationen zu Ernten und Ernährungssicherheit, welche die Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) und das World Food Programme (WFP) durchgeführt haben.
In den beiden nördlichen Gouvernements des Gazastreifens, wo rund 300.000 Menschen von den Kämpfen eingeschlossen sind, wird bis Mai mit einer Hungersnot gerechnet*. Der Schwellenwert für akuten Hunger wurde bereits weit überschritten, die akute Unterernährung bei Kindern unter fünf Jahren steuert in Rekordtempo auf den zweiten Schwellenwert für eine Hungersnot zu.
"Das Risiko einer Hungersnot im Land ist so hoch wie seit einem Vierteljahrhundert nicht mehr, und die Ernährungshilfe des WFP ist der letzte Rettungsanker für Millionen Afghanen", sagte Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP-Landesdirektorin in Afghanistan.
