Es wird erwartet, dass sich mehr als 31 Millionen Menschen in der Region in der kommenden sogenannten „mageren Jahreszeit“ – also der Zeit, in der die Nahrung vor der nächsten Ernte knapp ist– von Juni bis August nicht selbst ernähren können werden.
„Wir begrüßen die Zusage der äthiopischen Regierung, die Vorfälle zu untersuchen und die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen“, sagte Cindy McCain, Exekutivdirektorin des WFP. „Unsere erste Sorge gilt den Millionen von hungernden Menschen, die auf unsere Unterstützung angewiesen sind.
Der Wirbelsturm traf das Land im südlichen Afrika zum Ende der Regenzeit, als mehrere Flüsse und Gewässer bereits hohe Pegelstände aufwiesen. Ackerland wurde überschwemmt und die Ernte vernichtet, gerade als die Landwirte im Begriff waren, die einzige Ernte des Jahres einzufahren.
McCain, die seit 2021 Botschafterin der Vereinigten Staaten bei den drei UN-Organisationen für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft in Rom ist, übernimmt die Leitung einer Organisation, die im vergangenen Jahr 158 Millionen Menschen mit Ernährungshilfe unterstützt hat – mehr als jemals zuvor.
"Wir haben bereits unsere Häuser in Khartum verloren und mussten mit ansehen, wie unser Leben vor unseren Augen zerstört wurde. Nun müssen wir erneut fliehen und das Wenige, das uns geblieben ist, zurückzulassen. Hunderttausende fliehen zu Fuß und können nirgendwo hin.
