Die eindringliche Warnung des Globalen Berichts über Ernährungskrisen (Global Report on Food Crises) 2021 zeigt, dass Konflikte oder wirtschaftliche Schocks, die oft mit COVID-19 zusammenhängen, sowie extreme Wetterbedingungen weiterhin Millionen von Menschen in akute Ernährungsunsicherheit stürzen.

Der Bericht zeigt, dass 2020 mindestens 155 Millionen
„Hohe Nahrungsmittelpreise sind der neue beste Freund des Hungers. Wir haben bereits Konflikte, Klima und COVID-19, die zusammenarbeiten, um mehr Menschen in Hunger und Elend zu treiben. Jetzt haben sich die Nahrungsmittelpreise dem tödlichen Trio angeschlossen“, sagte WFP-Chef-Ökonom Arif Husain.
Angesichts der bis 2021 anhaltenden Dürre und einer schlechten letzten Ernte haben die erschöpften Gemeinschaften nur wenige Rücklagen, auf die sie zurückgreifen können. Viele mussten ihr Zuhause auf der Suche nach Essen und Arbeit verlassen. Es wird prognostiziert, dass etwa 1,35 Millionen Menschen im südlichen Madagaskar Hunger leiden werden.
Die Sicherheitslage ist nach wie vor äußerst prekär. WFP prüft Standorte, an denen der Zugang für humanitäre Hilfe gewährleistet ist, wobei Sicherheits-, Kapazitäts- und Zugangsüberlegungen eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
