Die meisten Menschen, die WFP und Partner in diesen Gebieten erreichten, hatten seit April keine humanitäre Hilfe mehr erhalten, obwohl WFP und andere UN-Organisationen mehrfach versucht hatten, einen Zugang zu diesen Menschen zu schaffen.
„Wir rufen dringend zur Hilfe auf, damit wir noch eine Chance haben, die großen Lücken rechtzeitig zu schließen, die sich abzeichnen“, sagte der WFP-Landesdirektor in Afghanistan, Louis Imbleau.
Nach einer massiven Ausweitung der Maßnahmen hat WFP inzwischen 330.000 Brote für Familien in der Stadt Charkiw, Bargeld für Geflüchtete in Lwiw und verzehrfertige Nahrungsmittel in verschiedenen Teilen des Landes bereitgestellt; mit zwei humanitären Konvois konnten auch die Konfliktgebiete von Sumy und Charkiw erreicht werden.
“Der Gedanke, dass die Menschen im Irak in diesen Zeiten immer noch unter Hunger leiden, ist für mich unerträglich", sagte der deutsche Botschafter in der Republik Irak Martin Jäger. "Deutschland setzt sich dafür ein, die irakische Bevölkerung beim Aufbau wirtschaftlicher Resilienz zu unterstützen, da dies die Grundlage für Wachstum und Stabilität ist.
Die Zahl der Menschen, die auf Ernährungshilfe angewiesen sind, ist auf 17,4 Millionen gestiegen - ein Anstieg um 1,2 Millionen im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr.
Zum Vergleich: Die zusätzlichen Kosten für WFP-Hilfen hätten tägliche Schulmahlzeiten für sechs Millionen Schulkinder über ein halbes Jahr finanzieren können. Dabei können Millionen Familien in der Region nicht einmal ihren Grundbedarf an Nahrungsmitteln decken.
Zehn Jahre nach seiner Unabhängigkeit erlebt der Südsudan seine schlimmste humanitäre Krise: 7,2 Millionen Menschen – 60 Prozent der Bevölkerung – sind von akutem Hunger betroffen, 1,4 Millionen Kinder unter fünf Jahren und eine halbe Million schwangere und stillende Frauen leiden an akuter Mangelernährung.

Seit dem 15. August hat WFP fast 300.000 Menschen in Amhara und Afar mit Nahrungsmitteln erreicht. Die zweite Runde der Nahrungsmittelverteilung in Tigray läuft seit dem 27.
Eine Analyse des WFP zeigt, dass bei einem Anstieg der globalen Durchschnittstemperatur um 2°C gegenüber dem vorindustriellen Niveau 189 Millionen Menschen zusätzlich von Hunger betroffen sein werden. Vulnerable Gemeinschaften werden weiterhin die Hauptlast der Auswirkungen tragen und nur begrenzte Mittel haben, um Klimafolgen abzufedern.
