Die Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), der United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), das UN World Food Programme (WFP), die World Health Organization (WHO) und Partner veröffentlichten heute neue Zahlen aus dem jüngsten Bericht zur Integrierten Klassifizierung der akuten Mangelernährung (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, IPC).
In den beiden nördlichen Gouvernements des Gazastreifens, wo rund 300.000 Menschen von den Kämpfen eingeschlossen sind, wird bis Mai mit einer Hungersnot gerechnet*. Der Schwellenwert für akuten Hunger wurde bereits weit überschritten, die akute Unterernährung bei Kindern unter fünf Jahren steuert in Rekordtempo auf den zweiten Schwellenwert für eine Hungersnot zu.
„Deutschland ist eine treibende Kraft im internationalen Kampf gegen den Hunger. Das zeigt sich nicht nur in großzügiger Unterstützung für WFP-Programme auf der ganzen Welt, sondern auch durch wichtige ressortübergreifende Initiativen, die Hunger als sicherheitspolitisches Thema etabliert haben“, sagte Dr. Martin Frick, Leiter der WFP-Büros in Berlin und Brüssel.
Als die Kämpfer in ihr sudanesisches Dorf kamen, floh die 50-jährige Aicha Madar mit ihrer Tochter Fatima und schloss sich Tausenden an, die sich auf den Weg über die Grenze in den Osten des Tschads machten.
"Die bewaffneten Gruppen haben alles niedergebrannt", sagt Aicha, die mit einer Gruppe anderer Flüchtlinge zusammensitzt und ihre einjährige Tochter auf dem Schoß hält.

Konflikte, Wirtschaftskrisen, Klimaextreme und steigende Preise für Düngemittel führen zu einer historischen Hungerkrise. Bis zu 783 Millionen Menschen wissen nicht, woher ihre nächste Mahlzeit kommt.
Während sich der Konflikt in der Ukraine zuspitzt, steht das Welternährungsprogramm der Vereinten Nationen (WFP) bereit, um die betroffene Bevölkerung zu unterstützen.
Als Ersthelfer in humanitären Notsituationen ist das WFP in der Lage, innerhalb von 72 Stunden nach Ausbruch einer Krise einzugreifen, vorausgesetzt, es wird Zugang gewährt und es sind Ressourcen verfügbar.
