Es wird erwartet, dass sich mehr als 31 Millionen Menschen in der Region in der kommenden sogenannten „mageren Jahreszeit“ – also der Zeit, in der die Nahrung vor der nächsten Ernte knapp ist– von Juni bis August nicht selbst ernähren können werden.
Vertrocknetes Land so weit das Auge reicht und keine Bäume in Sicht. Sie wurden alle für Brennholz gefällt. Nichts wächst mehr aus dem Boden – keine Nahrung weder für Menschen noch für Vieh. So sieht es in der Region Turkana im Nordwesten von Kenia aus, wo es seit drei Jahren nicht geregnet hat. Für die Dorfgemeinschaften, die hier leben, ist Viehzucht die Haupteinkommensquelle.
Dramatische Einschnitte in humanitärer Hilfe: Deutschland fällt hinter 2019 zurück „Im Entwurf fällt Deutschlands Engagement bei humanitärer Hilfe und langfristiger Hungerbekämpfung unter das Niveau von 2019 zurück. Es ist, als hätte es die Pandemie, die Kriege in der Ukraine, Sudan und im Nahen Osten nie gegeben.
Die Sicherheitslage ist nach wie vor äußerst prekär. WFP prüft Standorte, an denen der Zugang für humanitäre Hilfe gewährleistet ist, wobei Sicherheits-, Kapazitäts- und Zugangsüberlegungen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Sicherheit aller unserer Mitarbeiter*innen und Partner steht an oberster Stelle.
Der Besuch unterstreicht die beträchtlichen Investitionen der Regierungen Frankreichs und Deutschlands in das Land sowie ihre fortlaufende Partnerschaft mit der Regierung der Demokratischen Volksrepublik Laos und dem WFP. Diese Partnerschaft konzentriert sich insbesondere auf die Stärkung der Rolle der Frau angesichts der sich verschlechternden Ernährungssituation.
