Für viele Menschen ist es zunehmend schwierig geworden, sich und ihre Familien ausreichend zu ernähren.Die Krise im Südsudan wird von alarmierenden Hungerzahlen begleitet.
Jedes Jahr unterstützt das Welternährungsprogramm der Vereinten Nationen (WFP) Programme, die fast 200.000 Hektar Land auf der ganzen Welt wieder fruchtbar machen – eine Fläche mehr als doppelt so groß wie die Stadt New York.
Heute, in einer Zeit beispiellosen Hungers, sind 33 Prozent der weltweiten Böden zerstört.
Beasleys Libanon-Besuch erfolgt zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem das Land mit gleich drei Krisen kämpft: Der Explosion, dem wirtschaftlichen Zusammenbruch und den Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Pandemie. Während seines dreitägigen Aufenthalts im Libanon besichtigte er die Häfen von Beirut und Tripolis und nahm an einer Nahrungsmittelverteilung in Gemeinschaftsküchen des WFP-Partners Caritas teil.
Hilfsorganisationen kämpfen darum, den massiven Bedarf zu decken, bevor es zu spät ist. Über 90 Prozent der Familien haben nicht genug zu essen und die humanitäre Krise im ganzen Land verschärft sich.
„Eine der wichtigsten Kornkammern der Welt wurde vor einem Jahr in Brand gesetzt. Diese Kriegserklärung an die globale Ernährungssicherheit wirkt fort. Es ist eine anhaltende Katastrophe für die Menschen in der Ukraine und Millionen Hungernde weltweit“, sagte Dr. Martin Frick, Direktor der WFP-Büros in Berlin und Brüssel.
Frau Rabia ist über 60 und lebt zusammen mit ihren erwachsenen Kindern und deren Partner*innen in einem Haus. Ihr Leben war nie einfach, aber jetzt ist die Situation katastrophal, erzählt sie.
Keines ihrer Enkelkinder geht mehr zur Schule, sondern sie bleiben zu Hause oder werden auf die Straße geschickt, um Arbeit zu finden.
„Dringend fordern wir sicheren humanitären Zugang nach Libyen“, so Josette Sheeran, WFP-Exekutivdirektorin. „Hier wird das Ausmaß der Herausforderungen sichtbar, gegen die wir ankämpfen - besonders, wenn wir die Nothilfe für Libyen aufstocken müssen.“
Außerhalb der Hafenstadt Benghazi wurden Luftangriffe gemeldet.
