Rom, 10. April 2007 – Bei ihrem heutigen Treffen mit Mitarbeitern in der Zentrale des UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Rom, fordert die neue Exekutivdirektorin Josette Sheeran ein erneutes Engagement für die Armen und Hungrigen der Welt.
Bischkek, den 15. Juni 2010 - Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) hat mit einer Notoperation in Kirgisistan begonnen, um Menschen mit Ernährungshilfe zu unterstützen und logistische Hilfe bereit zu stellen.
"Ich bin Marieke Wagenhäuser, 34 Jahre alt, und war bis vor Kurzem in Dakar, Senegal, beim Regionalbüro für Westafrika des UN-Welternährungsprogramms (WFP) beschäftigt. Zu WFP bin ich über eine sogenannte Abordnung des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) gekommen. Schon zuvor habe ich im Rahmen der BMZ-Übergangshilfe mit WFP zur Sahel-Region gearbeitet.
Als weltweit größte humanitäre Organisation hilft das UN World Food Programme (WFP) oft an vorderster Front in den schwierigsten Notfällen. Mit dieser Erfahrung leistet WFP bereits jetzt Unterstützung bei der Reaktion auf die neuartige Coronavirus-Pandemie (COVID-19) und passt seine Planung an, damit die Ernährungshilfe auch in der unsicheren Zukunft fortgesetzt werden kann.
Abseits der Stadt Balaka im Süden Malawis, liegt das Dorf Jumbe. Die Bewohner der Gemeinde leben hauptsächlich vom Maisanbau. Doch zwischen Gebüsch und Lehmhäusern stehen die Felder leer — ausgetrocknet von einer schweren Dürre in Folge des Klimaphänomens El Niño.
„Unser Mais hat die Hitze nicht überstanden", sagt Katelin Singano-Dick, die zusammen mit ihrem Mann und sieben Kindern in Jumbe lebt.
Als die Kämpfer in ihr sudanesisches Dorf kamen, floh die 50-jährige Aicha Madar mit ihrer Tochter Fatima und schloss sich Tausenden an, die sich auf den Weg über die Grenze in den Osten des Tschads machten.
"Die bewaffneten Gruppen haben alles niedergebrannt", sagt Aicha, die mit einer Gruppe anderer Flüchtlinge zusammensitzt und ihre einjährige Tochter auf dem Schoß hält.

Extreme Klimaauswirkungen wie Dürren, Hitzewellen und Überschwemmungen sind eine der Hauptursachen für den Hunger. Sie zerstören Ernten und landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche und damit die Lebensgrundlage von ohnehin schon schutzbedürftigen Gemeinschaften.
