Mehr als 44.000 syrische Flüchtlinge haben aufgrund der Gewalt in ihrem Heimatland allein seit dem 15. August die Grenze in die kurdische Region im Nordirak überquert, teils über 13.000 Flüchtlinge pro Tag.
„Wir rufen dringend zur Hilfe auf, damit wir noch eine Chance haben, die großen Lücken rechtzeitig zu schließen, die sich abzeichnen“, sagte der WFP-Landesdirektor in Afghanistan, Louis Imbleau.
Weite Teile der Provinz Sofala wurden vom Zyklon Idai verwüstet, der Mosambik am 14. März traf und zu sintflutartigen Regenfällen in den folgenden Tagen führte. Der Bezirk Chemba wurde zwar nicht am stärksten vom Zyklon getroffen, ist jedoch seit langem anfällig für Überschwemmungen und Dürren. Mangelernährung und chronischer Hunger haben sich dadurch im Bezirk verschärft.
„WFP ist sehr dankbar für die wichtige Unterstützung Deutschlands, die dazu beitragen wird, die Ernährung bedürftiger ländlicher Gemeinden zu sichern. Die Familien dort sind regelmäßig von Klimakatastrophen wie Dürren und Überschwemmungen betroffen. Ihre Lebensgrundlagen sind dadurch erheblich beeinträchtigt.
Jane Pearce, WFP-Landesdirektorin im Irak, erklärte: „Mit Hilfe unserer Partner konnten wir unsere Nothilfe weiter ausbauen und auf neue Gebiete ausweiten.
Ziel der Übung ist es, im Ernstfall schnell und effizient Hilfe zu leisten. Eine Woche lang proben die Teilnehmer dafür ein fiktives Szenario: Demnach hat sich im Land Tukastan ein schweres Erdbeben ereignet. Die ersten Helfer treffen binnen 24 Stunden ein und finden eine schwer beschädigte, zum Teil zerstörte Infrastruktur vor.
Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) hat in kürzester Zeit einen Nahrungsmitttel-Nothilfeeinsatz gestartet, mehr als 180 Mitarbeiter*innen eingesetzt und die Verteilung von Nahrungsmitteln erhöht, um 1,4 Millionen Menschen zu erreichen. Jedoch ist dies kaum die Hälfte derer, die wir erreichen sollten.
Dank der großzügigen Unterstützung des Auswärtigen Amts kann WFP weiterhin Ernährungshilfe für 274.000 Bewohner*innen in Gaza und der Westbank über elektronische Gutscheinkarten leisten.
Hunger und Mangelernährung sind mörderisch. Sie kosten jedes Jahr viele Millionen Menschenleben. Kaum ein anderes Menschenrecht wird häufiger verletzt als das auf ausreichende Ernährung und Schutz vor Hunger. Kinder sind besonders betroffen – 15.000 verhungern noch immer, jeden Tag!
Beim Kampf gegen Hunger waren wir auf einem guten Weg.
