Vier von zehn Menschen in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, deren Bevölkerung auf 100 Millionen Menschen geschätzt wird, leiden nach jüngsten Daten Hunger.
MasterCard verfügt über umfangreiche Kompetenzen bei elektronischen Zahlungssystemen, während das World Food Programme sich international für die Bevölkerungsgruppen einsetzt, die am stärksten vom Hunger betroffen sind.
Der Bericht zeigt, dass die Anzahl der Menschen, die hungern oder deren Ernährung nicht gesichert ist, von 3,3 Millionen im Jahr 2011 auf nun 4,7 Millionen Menschen gesprungen ist.
„Die Frontlinie im Kampf gegen das Coronavirus verschiebt sich zusehends von reichen in arme Länder“, sagte WFP-Exekutivdirektor David Beasley.
„Bis zu dem Tag, an dem wir einen Impfstoff haben, bietet gesundes und ausreichendes Essen den besten Schutz.
Das Virus kann eine verheerende Wirkung auf Kinder haben, die bereits durch schlechte Ernährung geschwächt sind. Gleichzeitig wirkt sich die Pandemie besonders schlimm auf gefährdete Familien aus, die auf einen Tageslohn oder eine Überweisung von Verwandten aus dem Ausland angewiesen sind.
BANGUI – Zehn Lastwagen mit Nahrungsmitteln des WFP – 250 Tonnen Reis und Maismehl – kamen am Montag nach einer 600 Kilometer weiten Fahrt von der kamerunischen Grenze in Bangui an. Sie waren Teil eines 60 Wagen starken Konvois, der von der afrikanisch geführten Internationalen Schutzmission in der Zentralafrikanischen Republik (MISCA) begleitet wurde.
Die Initiative wird von der deutschen Bundesregierung finanziert – dem ersten Geber für ARC Replica. Der einzigartige Mechanismus zur Finanzierung von Versicherungen gegen Klimarisiken wird von WFP und Start Network unterstützt. ARC Replica ergänzt ARC durch eine planbare und zuverlässige Finanzierungsmöglichkeit für frühzeitige Hilfe nach extremen Wetterschocks.
Insgesamt hat WFP seit Beginn der Kämpfe Mitte Juni über 838.000 Menschen im Irak mit Ernährungshilfe unterstützt. Aufgrund der anhaltenden Kämpfe verschlechtert sich die humanitäre Situation zusehends.
Der Konflikt ist entlang mehr als 40 Fronten eskaliert, die Kosten für Grundnahrungsmittel sind höher als je zuvor und die Währung hat allein dieses Jahr 25 Prozent ihres Wertes verloren – und damit 70 Prozent im Vergleich zu vor dem Krieg eingebüßt.
