BERLIN – Mit dem heutigen Beginn der Generalversammlung der Sahel-Allianz unter der Präsidentschaft von Entwicklungsministerin Svenja Schulze tritt auch die Kooperation des UN-Welternährungsprogramms (WFP), des Kinderhilfswerks der Vereinten Nationen (UNICEF) und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in fünf Ländern der Region in eine neue Phase.

Der Bericht "Sahel Social Cohesion Research in Burkina Faso and Niger" wurde von WFP, dem International Food Policy and Research Institute (IFPRI) und dem Institute for Peace and Development (IPD) durchgeführt.
Die Bestätigung des Famine Review Committee (FRC) einer Hungersnot im Zamzam Vertriebenencamp ist die erste Feststellung einer Hungersnot durch das FRC seit mehr als sieben Jahren und erst das dritte Mal, dass eine Hungersnot festgestellt wurde, seit das System vor 20 Jahren eingerichtet wurde.
WFP baut die Hilfe weiter aus, um bis Ende des Jahres fünf Millionen Menschen zusätzlich mit lebensrettenden Nahrungsmitteln zu versorgen. Damit verdoppelt sich die Zahl der Menschen, die WFP noch zu Beginn des Jahres unterstützen wollte.
“Der Krieg im Sudan könnte die weltweit größte Hungerkrise auszulösen”, warnte die Exekutivdirektorin. “Vor 20 Jahren war Darfur die größte Hungerkrise der Welt und die Weltgemeinschaft ist zusammengekommen, um zu handeln. Aber heute sind die Menschen im Sudan vergessen worden.

"Die Auswirkungen dieses Konflikts erstrecken sich über drei Länder - Sudan, Südsudan und Tschad - und haben die größte Vertreibungskrise der Welt ausgelöst. Seit fast einem Jahr dauert der Krieg an, und es gibt keine Anzeichen dafür, dass die Zahl der Familien, die über die Grenzen fliehen, abnimmt.
