Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) hat eine lange Geschichte innovativer Partnerschaften mit dem Privatsektor, die sich aus technischer Zusammenarbeit, Wissenstransfer und finanzieller Unterstützung zusammensetzt.
Drei aufeinanderfolgende Jahre mit wenig Regen haben die Ernten dezimiert und ein ungewöhnlich hohes Viehsterben verursacht. Der Mangel an Wasser und Weideland zwingt Familien, ihr Zuhause zu verlassen, und führt zu zunehmenden Konflikten zwischen den Gemeinschaften.
Es wird erwartet, dass sich mehr als 31 Millionen Menschen in der Region in der kommenden sogenannten „mageren Jahreszeit“ – also der Zeit, in der die Nahrung vor der nächsten Ernte knapp ist– von Juni bis August nicht selbst ernähren können werden.

Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) finanziert sich ausschließlich durch freiwillige Spenden. Über 90 Prozent der Gelder, die WFP zur Verfügung stehen, stammen von Regierungen. Während sich Vertreter*innen aus 40 Staaten beim Petersberger Klimadialog in Berlin über den Kurs der internationalen Klimapolitik austauschen, hat die Klimakrise bereits heute verheerende Auswirkungen auf das Leben von Millionen Menschen weltweit.
Im Jahr 2021 haben extreme Wetterverhältnisse zu den meisten Ernährungskrisen weltweit beigetragen.
Zum Vergleich: Die zusätzlichen Kosten für WFP-Hilfen hätten tägliche Schulmahlzeiten für sechs Millionen Schulkinder über ein halbes Jahr finanzieren können. Dabei können Millionen Familien in der Region nicht einmal ihren Grundbedarf an Nahrungsmitteln decken.
