Zahlen von WFP zeigen, dass derzeit rund 345 Millionen Menschen unter akutem Hunger leiden - ein Anstieg um fast 200 Millionen seit Anfang 2020. Von diesen Menschen sind 43 Millionen nur einen Schritt von einer Hungersnot entfernt. Erst kürzlich musste WFP die Ernährungshilfe in Afghanistan, Bangladesch und Palästina kürzen, da die Not die verfügbaren Mittel übersteigt.
Heute stehen 34 Millionen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt am Rande einer Hungersnot – und der kleinste Schock könnte sie in den Abgrund reißen. Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) arbeitet rund um die Uhr, um Hungersnöte abzuwenden. Doch damit das möglich ist, brauchen wir dringend 5,5 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Grande Rivière du Nord verdankt seinen Namen dem Fluss, der das Dorf in zwei Ufer teilt. Doch in den letzten zwei Jahren hat es kaum geregnet, die meisten Ernten gingen verloren.

Es wird erwartet, dass sich mehr als 31 Millionen Menschen in der Region in der kommenden sogenannten „mageren Jahreszeit“ – also der Zeit, in der die Nahrung vor der nächsten Ernte knapp ist– von Juni bis August nicht selbst ernähren können werden.

WFP prüft Standorte, an denen der Zugang für humanitäre Hilfe gewährleistet ist, wobei Sicherheits-, Kapazitäts- und Zugangsüberlegungen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Nach sieben Wochen heftiger Bombardements waren 1,8 Millionen Menschen im Gazastreifen – rund 80% der Bevölkerung – auf der Flucht, gefangen und mit akutem Hunger konfrontiert. Dann kam endlich eine einwöchige humanitäre Pause.
