Weite Teile der Provinz Sofala wurden vom Zyklon Idai verwüstet, der Mosambik am 14. März traf und zu sintflutartigen Regenfällen in den folgenden Tagen führte. Der Bezirk Chemba wurde zwar nicht am stärksten vom Zyklon getroffen, ist jedoch seit langem anfällig für Überschwemmungen und Dürren. Addis Abeba - Die neue Exekutivdirektorin des UN World Food Programme (WFP), Josette Sheeran, hat heute in Äthiopien Landwirte, Getreidehändler und Regierungsvertreter dazu aufgerufen, WFP bei der Entwicklung “besserer Modelle für den Einkauf von Nahrungsmittelhilfe” zu unterstützen.
Die Klimakrise zerstört Leben und Lebensgrundlagen auf der ganzen Welt. Emissionssenkungen zur Eindämmung des globalen Temperaturanstiegs sind von entscheidender Bedeutung, aber wir können nicht warten, bis diese umgesetzt werden. Die Menschen, die schon jetzt am meisten von der Krise betroffen sind, brauchen dringend Unterstützung bei der Anpassung an die Auswirkungen.
Hunger und Mangelernährung sind mörderisch. Sie kosten jedes Jahr viele Millionen Menschenleben. Kaum ein anderes Menschenrecht wird häufiger verletzt als das auf ausreichende Ernährung und Schutz vor Hunger. Kinder sind besonders betroffen – 15.000 verhungern noch immer, jeden Tag!
Beim Kampf gegen Hunger waren wir auf einem guten Weg.
"Dies ist ein verheerender Schlag für die Rohingya und ein ebenso verheerender Schlag für die humanitäre Gemeinschaft", sagte Domenico Scalpelli, WFP-Landesdirektor in Bangladesch.
Viele Vertriebene konnten kaum etwas von zu Hause mitnehmen und fanden Zuflucht in Schulen oder bei Familien und Freunden weiter im Süden.
Unterdessen weitet WFP die reguläre Ernährungshilfe in den Provinzen Hasaka und Raqqa auf bis zu 580.000 Bedürftige aus.
„Gerade als wir dachten, schlimmer kann es nicht mehr kommen, müssen wir unsere Hilfe weiter einschränken”, sagte Muhannad Hadi, WFP-Regionaldirektor für den Mittleren Osten, Nordafrika, Zentralasien und Osteuropa.
