BERLIN – Mit dem heutigen Beginn der Generalversammlung der Sahel-Allianz unter der Präsidentschaft von Entwicklungsministerin Svenja Schulze tritt auch die Kooperation des UN-Welternährungsprogramms (WFP), des Kinderhilfswerks der Vereinten Nationen (UNICEF) und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in fünf Ländern der Region in eine neue Phase.

Der Bericht zeigt, dass die Anzahl der Menschen, die hungern oder deren Ernährung nicht gesichert ist, von 3,3 Millionen im Jahr 2011 auf nun 4,7 Millionen Menschen gesprungen ist.
Etwa 1,14 Millionen Menschen im Süden Madagaskars leiden an einem hohen Maß an akutem Hunger. Davon befinden sich fast 14.000 Menschen in Phase 5 – der höchsten und schlimmsten Kategorie der fünfstufigen Skala der sogenannten „Integrated Food Security Phase Classification“ (IPC).
Zum ersten Mal sind 45.000 Menschen in der Sahelzone von katastrophalem Hunger (Phase 5 Hungersnot) - bedroht - darunter 42.000 in Burkina Faso und 2.500 in Mali.
Die kombinierten Auswirkungen von Konflikten, Klimaschocks, COVID-19 und hohen Lebensmittelpreisen treiben den Hunger und die Mangelernährung in der Region weiter in die Höhe.
„Die FAO braucht 76 Millionen US-Dollar, um die Heuschrecken zu stoppen", sagte Beasley. „Wenn wir jetzt nichts unternehmen, wird WFP bis das 15-fache dieses Betrags – mehr als 1 Milliarde US-Dollar – benötigen, um den Menschen zu helfen, deren Lebensgrundlagen und Ernten durch die Heuschrecken vernichtet wurden.
Das Welternährungsprogramm (WFP) fordert die sofortige Wiedereröffnung der Schwarzmeerhäfen - einschließlich Odessa -, damit dringend benötigten Nahrungsmittel aus der Ukraine die Menschen erreichen können, die in Ländern wie Afghanistan, Äthiopien, Südsudan, Syrien und Jemen von Hunger betroffen sind.

Die jüngste Analyse des sogenannten Cadre Harmonisé (eines Zusammenschlusses verschiedener Organisationen zur einheitlichen Hungermessung) zeigt in Burkina Faso die drastische Zunahme des akuten Hungers um mehr als 50 Prozent seit der letzten Bewertung im März.
Laut IPC-Bericht ist die Ernährungsunsicherheit in Afghanistan auf die anhaltenden Auswirkungen von COVID-19, den bewaffneten Konflikt, den sprunghaften Anstieg der Nahrungsmittelpreise, die hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und den Einkommensverlust sowie den Beginn des komplexen und wiederkehrenden Wetterereignis La Niña zurückzuführen.
