Die Bestätigung des Famine Review Committee (FRC) einer Hungersnot im Zamzam Vertriebenencamp ist die erste Feststellung einer Hungersnot durch das FRC seit mehr als sieben Jahren und erst das dritte Mal, dass eine Hungersnot festgestellt wurde, seit das System vor 20 Jahren eingerichtet wurde.
“Die Versorgung mit Nahrungsmitteln und Wasser ist im Gazastreifen praktisch nicht mehr gegeben. Nur ein Bruchteil der benötigten Mengen kommt über die Grenzen herein. Angesichts des nahenden Winters, der unsicheren und überfüllten Notunterkünfte und des Mangels an sauberem Wasser, droht der Zivilbevölkerung unmittelbar der Hungertod”, erklärte WFP-Exekutivdirektorin Cindy McCain.
„Deutschland steht an der Seite des afghanischen Volkes und wir werden unser Engagement fortsetzen, um den Gemeinden zu helfen, auf eigenen Füßen zu stehen“, sagte Katharina Spiess, Leiterin des BMZ-Referats ”Krisenmanagement, Wiederaufbau und Entwicklungsübergangshilfe“.
Im Norden des Gazastreifens droht innerhalb der nächsten sechs Wochen eine Hungersnot. Kinder sterben bereits an Hunger. Wenn eine Hungersnot ausgerufen wird, bedeutet das, dass zu viele Menschen bereits an Hunger gestorben sind.
Zahlen von WFP zeigen, dass derzeit rund 345 Millionen Menschen unter akutem Hunger leiden - ein Anstieg um fast 200 Millionen seit Anfang 2020. Von diesen Menschen sind 43 Millionen nur einen Schritt von einer Hungersnot entfernt. Erst kürzlich musste WFP die Ernährungshilfe in Afghanistan, Bangladesch und Palästina kürzen, da die Not die verfügbaren Mittel übersteigt.
Nach einer massiven Ausweitung der Maßnahmen hat WFP inzwischen 330.000 Brote für Familien in der Stadt Charkiw, Bargeld für Geflüchtete in Lwiw und verzehrfertige Nahrungsmittel in verschiedenen Teilen des Landes bereitgestellt; mit zwei humanitären Konvois konnten auch die Konfliktgebiete von Sumy und Charkiw erreicht werden.
Ermöglicht wurde die Lieferung durch das Auswärtige Amt, das die gesamten Lieferkosten in Höhe von 15 Millionen Euro übernahm. Dazu gehören die Kosten für den Transport des Weizens von der Ukraine in den Sudan sowie die Durchführung und Verteilung an Notleidende im Land.
Während der Krieg im Land in den zehnten Monat geht, explodieren die Hungerzahlen.
"Das Risiko einer Hungersnot im Land ist so hoch wie seit einem Vierteljahrhundert nicht mehr, und die Ernährungshilfe des WFP ist der letzte Rettungsanker für Millionen Afghanen", sagte Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP-Landesdirektorin in Afghanistan.
Bis Mittwochmorgen hatte WFP fast 64.000 Menschen erreicht, die dringend Ernährungshilfe benötigen. Es wurden verzehrfertige Nahrungsmittelrationen, Nahrungsmittelpakete für Familien und warme Mahlzeiten bereitgestellt.
