Der dramatische Anstieg der Zahl der Hungernden kommt zu einer Zeit, in der die COVID-19-Pandemie die fragilen Länder in der Region erreicht, die über die schwächsten Gesundheitssystemen der Welt verfügen.
Burkina Faso ist das Land mit den meisten offiziell gemeldeten Todesfällen durch COVID-19 in ganz Subsahara-Afrika.
Mit Zuwendungen in Höhe von 1,2 Milliarden Euro für die Arbeit von WFP in über 60 Ländern, ist Deutschland wieder zweitgrößter Geber für WFP und finanziell an der Hälfte der Einsätze weltweit beteiligt. Deutsche Mittel flossen auch 2023 in beide Arbeitsbereiche von WFP – humanitäre Hilfe und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit.
