Als weltweit größte humanitäre Organisation hilft das UN World Food Programme (WFP) oft an vorderster Front in den schwierigsten Notfällen. Mit dieser Erfahrung leistet WFP bereits jetzt Unterstützung bei der Reaktion auf die neuartige Coronavirus-Pandemie (COVID-19) und passt seine Planung an, damit die Ernährungshilfe auch in der unsicheren Zukunft fortgesetzt werden kann.
Der Konflikt ist entlang mehr als 40 Fronten eskaliert, die Kosten für Grundnahrungsmittel sind höher als je zuvor und die Währung hat allein dieses Jahr 25 Prozent ihres Wertes verloren – und damit 70 Prozent im Vergleich zu vor dem Krieg eingebüßt.
Heute stehen 34 Millionen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt am Rande einer Hungersnot – und der kleinste Schock könnte sie in den Abgrund reißen. Das UN World Food Programme (WFP) arbeitet rund um die Uhr, um Hungersnöte abzuwenden. Doch damit das möglich ist, brauchen wir dringend 5,5 Milliarden US-Dollar.

Die Situation ist sehr schmerzhaft für alle, die in Idlib arbeiten. Am Ende des Tages möchtest man ins Bett gehen und zufrieden damit sein, alles versucht zu haben, um den Menschen zu helfen. Aber so viele neue Familien kommen in bereits überfüllten Camps an.
Im Rahmen der allgemeinen Ernährungshilfe erhalten derzeit 13,1 Millionen Notleidende im Jemen Rationen, die etwa 40 Prozent des standardisierten Lebensmittelkorbs entsprechen. WFP rechnet damit, dass ohne neue Mittel bis zu drei Millionen Menschen im Norden und weitere 1,4 Millionen im Süden betroffen sein könnten.
„Für Millionen Kinder auf der ganzen Welt ist die Schulmahlzeit die einzige pro Tag. Ohne Schulspeisungen leiden sie Hunger, riskieren krank zu werden oder die Schule abzubrechen. Das verschlechtert ihre Chancen, der Armut zu entkommen.
Da das Land von einer verheerenden Dürre heimgesucht wird und die fünfte Regenzeit in Folge ausbleibt, wird in mehreren Distrikten der Bay-Region Somalias von Oktober bis Dezember eine Hungersnot prognostiziert, sofern keine Mittel zur Aufrechterhaltung und Ausweitung der humanitären Hilfe bereitgestellt werden.
