Seit 2012 nimmt Mauretanien malische Flüchtlinge auf, von denen derzeit 89.468 in der südlichen Region Hodh Chargui leben. Das Land hat sich voll und ganz einer Politik der Integration verschrieben und Maßnahmen ergriffen, um Flüchtlingen den gleichen Zugang zu Dienstleistungen zu gewähren wie Einheimischen.
„Eine der wichtigsten Kornkammern der Welt wurde vor einem Jahr in Brand gesetzt. Diese Kriegserklärung an die globale Ernährungssicherheit wirkt fort. Es ist eine anhaltende Katastrophe für die Menschen in der Ukraine und Millionen Hungernde weltweit“, sagte Dr. Martin Frick, Direktor der WFP-Büros in Berlin und Brüssel.
Das ist die zweite Lieferung von WFP-Nahrungsmitteln, die die Ukraine auf dem Seeweg seit Beginn des Konflikts im Februar verlässt. Die MS Karteria, die 37.000 Tonnen Weizen an Bord hat, wird zunächst in der Türkei Halt machen, wo das Getreide zu Mehl verarbeitet wird. Anschließend wird es in den Jemen verschifft.

„Wir begrüßen die Zusage der äthiopischen Regierung, die Vorfälle zu untersuchen und die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen“, sagte Cindy McCain, Exekutivdirektorin des WFP. „Unsere erste Sorge gilt den Millionen von hungernden Menschen, die auf unsere Unterstützung angewiesen sind.
Bis zum Jahresende werden etwa 800.000 Flüchtlinge mit diesen elektronischen Nahrungsmittelgutscheinen in teilnehmenden Geschäften im Libanon einkaufen können.
