Seit Ende August sind insgesamt rund 146.000 Schutzsuchende über die Grenze nach Cox’s Bazar gekommen. In diesem Zeitraum hat WFP mehr als 28.800 Neuankömmlinge mit Energiekeksen versorgt, die mit Vitaminen und Närstoffen angereichert wurden. Weitere 28.000 bekamen Khichuri, eine warme Mahlzeit aus Reis und Linsen, über lokale Küchen ausgehändigt.
Die Nahrungsmittelverteilungen in Punjab und Sindh wurden seit ihrem Beginn am Wochenende bereits aufgestockt, gleichzeitig begann zusätzlich zu den seit 1. August durchgeführten Nahrungsmittelverteilungen in der Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provinz am Montag die Verteilung der WFP-Hilfe auch in Baluchistan.
Pjöngjang, 22. August 2006 – Das World Food Programme teilte am 18. August mit, dass die Demokratische Volksrepublik Korea der Hilfe für die Opfer der gegenwärtigen Flutkatastrophe zugestimmt hat. Etwa 13.000 Einwohner des Landkreises Songchon in der Provinz Süd-Phyongan sollen 30 Tagesrationen mit Weizenmehl und angereichertem Pflanzenöl mit einem Gesamtgewicht von 150 Tonnen erhalten.
"Häufige Wirbelstürme während der Landwirtschaftssaison bedeuten Ernteverluste, hohe Nahrungsmittelpreise und bedrohen den Zugang zu Nahrung", sagte die stellvertretende WFP-Regionaldirektorin Margaret Malu.
