Konflikte, Wirtschaftskrisen, Klimaextreme und steigende Preise für Düngemittel führen zu einer historischen Hungerkrise. Bis zu 783 Millionen Menschen wissen nicht, woher ihre nächste Mahlzeit kommt.
Der Wirbelsturm traf das Land im südlichen Afrika zum Ende der Regenzeit, als mehrere Flüsse und Gewässer bereits hohe Pegelstände aufwiesen. Ackerland wurde überschwemmt und die Ernte vernichtet, gerade als die Landwirte im Begriff waren, die einzige Ernte des Jahres einzufahren.
Die Zahl der Menschen, die an der Grenze ankommen, ist in den letzten Tagen dramatisch angestiegen, was zu langen Warteschlangen an den Grenzübergängen geführt hat. Unter ihnen befinden sich ältere Menschen und viele Kinder.

Der Besuch unterstreicht die beträchtlichen Investitionen der Regierungen Frankreichs und Deutschlands in das Land sowie ihre fortlaufende Partnerschaft mit der Regierung der Demokratischen Volksrepublik Laos und dem WFP. Diese Partnerschaft konzentriert sich insbesondere auf die Stärkung der Rolle der Frau angesichts der sich verschlechternden Ernährungssituation.
