Die Zivilbevölkerung in El Fasher und in der gesamten Region Darfur leidet bereits unter verheerendem Hunger, doch Hilfslieferungen von Nahrungsmitteln kamen bisher wegen der Kämpfe und endlosen bürokratischen Hürden nur sporadisch an. Die jüngste Eskalation der Gewalt rund um El Fasher hat Hilfskonvois gestoppt, die vom tschadischen Grenzübergang Tine kommen.
Am Dienstag hat WFP durch den Partner LibAid bereits 2.000 Menschen erreicht, die aus Derna geflohen und in der Stadt Benghazi Zuflucht gesucht hatten.
„Eine der wichtigsten Kornkammern der Welt wurde vor einem Jahr in Brand gesetzt. Diese Kriegserklärung an die globale Ernährungssicherheit wirkt fort. Weite Teile der Provinz Sofala wurden vom Zyklon Idai verwüstet, der Mosambik am 14. März traf und zu sintflutartigen Regenfällen in den folgenden Tagen führte. Der Bezirk Chemba wurde zwar nicht am stärksten vom Zyklon getroffen, ist jedoch seit langem anfällig für Überschwemmungen und Dürren. Mangelernährung und chronischer Hunger haben sich dadurch im Bezirk verschärft.
