San Salvador, den 10.11.2009 - Schätzungen des UN World Food Programme (WFP) zufolge benötigen mindestens 10.000 Menschen in El Salvador in den kommenden Tagen dringend Ernährungshilfe. Schwere Regenfälle waren in den vergangenen Tagen über El Salvador hinweg gezogen und hatten starke Schäden angerichtet.
Etwa 1,14 Millionen Menschen im Süden Madagaskars leiden an einem hohen Maß an akutem Hunger. Davon befinden sich fast 14.000 Menschen in Phase 5 – der höchsten und schlimmsten Kategorie der fünfstufigen Skala der sogenannten „Integrated Food Security Phase Classification“ (IPC).

Das Feld von Laika James war von sogenannten Herbst-Heerwürmern befallen. Das gefräßige Insekt bedroht wieder und wieder die Ernte von Millionen afrikanischen Bauern.
Die globale Ernährungskrise ist das Resultat mehrerer konkurrierender Krisen - verursacht durch Klimaschocks, Konflikte und wirtschaftlichen Druck -, welche die Zahl der Hungernden in der Welt allein in den ersten Monaten des Jahres 2022 von 282 Millionen auf 345 Millionen ansteigen ließen.
„Freerice hat gezeigt, dass ein einfacher Klick auf die Maus sehr viel ausmachen kann, um hungrigen Menschen zu helfen“, so die Direktorin der Kommunikationsabteilung des UN World Food Programme (WFP), Nancy Roman.

Auf den ersten Blick scheint sich ein Gefühl von Normalität und Alltag im Flüchtlingscamp Um Rakuba im Osten Sudans eingestellt zu haben.
"Dank der Pause waren unsere Teams vor Ort im Einsatz und sind in Gebiete vorgedrungen, die wir schon lange nicht mehr erreicht haben. Was wir sehen, ist katastrophal. Es besteht die Gefahr einer Hungersnot und dass Menschen verhungern.
"Wir haben bereits unsere Häuser in Khartum verloren und mussten mit ansehen, wie unser Leben vor unseren Augen zerstört wurde. Nun müssen wir erneut fliehen und das Wenige, das uns geblieben ist, zurückzulassen. Hunderttausende fliehen zu Fuß und können nirgendwo hin.
Äthiopien – Im Flüchtlingslager Dolo Ado leiden 50 Prozent aller neuankommenden Kinder unter fünf Jahren an akuter Mangelernährung. In den Lagern und Transitzentren in Dolo Ado unterstützt WFP Kinder deshalb mit Spezialnahrung und hat bereits damit begonnen, das angereicherte Spezialprodukt Plumpy’Sup für unter 5-Jährige zu verteilen.
